This varied Botswana safari combones vast, wildlife-rich landscapes of the Kalahari with two contrasting areas of the Okavango Delta. Spend thee nights at each camp, travelling between by a combination of light aircraft and helicopter to experience Botswana from the desert to the waterways of the Delta.

Itinerary

place DAYS 1 - 3 - Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Arrive into Maun and take a light aircraft to Dinaka, situated within the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Fly over wide horizons, open grasslands and distinctive semi-arid landscapes.

During the stay there will be the opportunity to join morning and afternoon game drives, seeking out the impressive variety of desert adapted wildlife, including black-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Dinaka is particularly rewarding for photographers with an underground hide offering the opportunity to witness wildlife at eye level as animals visit the camps waterhole.

Spend time with San Bushmen on an educational walk, learning traditional tracking techniques and the methods in which generations have interpreted and survived the Kalahari environment. After dark, the lack of light polition makes for exceptional star gazing.

place DAYS 4 - 6 - South West Okavango Delta

South West Okavango Delta

Leave the desert behind and watch the landscape transform from the sandy Kalahari into a mosiac of floodplains, islands and waterways. Kanana is situated on a private concession along the Xudum River, an excellent all-round safari destionation that combines rewarding game viewing with the opportuity to experience the Delta from both land and water. Acitivites vary according to season and water levels, which when right allow for vehicles to be exchanged for a mokoro which glide quietly through narrow channels.

Birding is exceptional at Kanana and the concession is home to one of Southern Africa's largest seasonal heronries, while the elusive Pel's fishing owl is regularly sighted in the area.

place DAYS 7 - 9 - North East Okavango Delta

North East Okavango Delta

The final three nights of this itinerary are spent at Maxa camp overlooking the permanent Maxa Lagoon. The emphasis at Maxa is on discovery, with standard safari schedules replaced in favour of deep immersion in the wilderness. Spend days exploring on drives or heading out on foot with expert guides and as night falls take the opportunity to track nocturnal wildlife using specilaised equipment that minimses any distruption to the animals. Maxa makes for a particularly atmospheric finale to the journey heightened by the unique location deep within one of the Delta's less-explored wilderness areas.
